The Hypocrisy of Black Church Leadership Concerning Donald Trump

As a Black Pastor, and someone who, like Jesus, must remain a-political to reach all who are lost, I am deeply troubled by the hypocrisy of black Christian leadership (scholarship) and their vitriol against President Donald Trump. Today, I begin a series of articles that deconstructs their unbiblical stance, rooted in pure hypocrisy and “buck dancing” for the devil, while hiding behind the guise of righteous speech.

What sets this series apart is my focus on the equality of the gospel, Jesus’ actions

toward Israel’s political enemies (Rome), and the sobering reality that while Black Americans have achieved the highest levels of education in our history, our leaders have become educated tools for Satan (2 Tim. 3:1-9, Rom. 1:18-23).

In Romans 1, Paul warns the church about people who have changed the truth of God into a lie, worshipping animals rather than God. Today, their spiritual descendants worship politics, education, and power.

Let me be clear from the start: I renounce any form of politics or politicians who do not ground their platform in the doctrine of Jesus Christ (Gal. 1:8-9, 2 John 1:9-10, 1 Tim. 6:3-5). Neither Democrats nor Republicans preach Christ as their foundational belief system, and for that reason, both should be rejected (2 Cor. 6:14-17, 1 John 2:15-17). Didn’t Jesus say we are “either with Him or against Him” (Matt. 12:30, Mark 9:40, Luke 11:23)?

I once asked a local Pastor, who also leads the Human Rights Commission, how he could support the Democrat Party while rejecting Republicans (or vice versa). His response was the typical, thoughtless answer I’ve come to expect: “I weigh the totality of the evidence. I don’t agree with everything they (Democrats) do, but…” Wasn’t this how the serpent deceived Adam and Eve, a little truth mixed in with a lie (Gen. 3)?

On the other side, the roughly 10% of Black Pastors who support Republicans argue that, as Christians, they cannot endorse the Democrat stance on same-sex marriage and abortion. What neither group seems to realize is that their positions place them in opposition to others in the Body of Christ, creating unnecessary divisions that have nothing to do with righteousness (1 Cor. 1:10, Eph. 4:3-6, Rom. 16:17).

Within the body, there are at least four sides of the issue; Republican, Democrats, Green Party, and Libertarians, all staking a claim to truth. This is godless confusion, and is it not written, “God is not the author of confusion” (1 Cor. 14:33, Jam. 3:16)?

If that weren’t troubling enough, there’s a national group of deceived leaders who claim to fight against white Christian nationalism (Trumpism) while standing against American hegemonic practices. Yet, these same leaders vote Democrat, encourage their congregations to do the same, and ignore (or are ignorant of) the fact that every U.S. President, including Barack Obama, has protected these systems through the ruthless use of the U.S. military industrial complex.

What do they think the mission to destabilize Russia is about? (Hint: research BRICS)? Do they not know the purpose of President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton (both of whom they voted for and support) killing the President of an African country, Muammar Gaddafi, was to do the same as Trump which is protecting the U.S. Dollar.

Then, out of the other sides of their mouthes they preach, "the love of money is the root of all evil!" If these preachers protect political leaders, irrespective of party, who love money, aren't they guilty of the same love?

Here is what the Lord’s people should know about black religious leaders in general: righteousness is not the goal, protecting their power, position, and prestige is. More plainly, because Obama is a black hegemon, supports same-sex marriage, and is a radical abortionist, we should follow him rather than a racist like Trump.

Paul posed this question to the Roman Church leadership: “Oh man of God, why do you judge someone else for doing the same thing you are? By doing this, how will you escape the judgment of God?” (Rom. 2:1-3).

When we understand that neither political party is rooted in the doctrine of Christ, yet Black leaders continue to support them, the picture becomes clearer: confused leaders produce confused sheep, and this is contributing to the credibility crisis in the Black church.

What’s even more distressing is their stated mission, supported by an unbiblical “credo” is to "rise up" against a President who is not better or worse than those they vote for, and confrontation with other Christians (MAGA), just as blind, is godly! More plainly, one group of alcoholics are critical of other drunks because they drink a different brand of liquor.

Here is the above ministerial cohorts declaration:

“In the legacy of the Black Church tradition, we as legatees recognize the sacrificial witness and scholarship of Athanasius of Alexandria, Augustine of Hippo, Clement of Alexandria, Cyprian of Carthage, Origen of Alexandria, and Tertullian of Carthage wherein these African theologians contributed to the development of trinitarian Christianity.”

Do you notice what’s missing here? There’s mention of Christian traditionalist but no biblical authors. The manner in which this statement is framed serves three purposes:

  1. Orthodoxy Has Primacy Over Scripture: As someone who has pursued advanced, accredited Christian studies, I’ve seen how scholarship often values staying in its echo chamber, free from direct biblical challenge. Largely, they don’t care what the Bible says; they only care how it benefits their publishing goals and increases personal prestige in the eyes of others. Hence, the focus on ancient scholars and the absence of any mention of the simple men who wrote Scripture (1 Cor. 1:18-27).

  2. Titles Over Truth: Historically, it hasn’t been the learned religious leaders who defended the faith rather they serve the role of persecutors of those who do. These leaders aren’t led by the Holy Spirit; they depend on titles, positions, and being published to establish themselves, rather than lifting up Jesus Christ (John 12:32).

  3. Repeating History: Solomon wrote "there is no new thing under the sun" (Eccles. 1:9). Wasn't it the same religious leaders and scholars who killed Jesus, persecuted His Apostles, and let their intellect block the revelation of the Holy Spirit (Matt. 12:14, Mark 11:18, John 11:47-48)? Like the Pharisees and Scribes, who thought they were fighting for God but rejected His truth (Jesus), modernity does the same, deceived into thinking they serve both God and His people.

The bottom line is they believe Democrat rule is better than Republican and being mindful that neither bring the doctrine of Jesus Christ (2 John 1:10). The larger issue is a refusal to accept God’s will because they don’t like His choice. While this could be dismissed as political bias, their sin is far more grievous: they don’t believe what they teach others concerning the sovereignty of God (2 Tim. 3:1-7).

We can’t teach, “God’s thoughts are not our thoughts, neither are His ways our ways, says the Lord” (Isaiah 55:8), and then organize a national effort against His decisions! Since when does the Lord require someone be a follower of Jesus to accomplish His purposes? Either nothing is impossible for Him or its is (Matt. 19:26, Luke 1:37).

Perhaps preachers and scholars can point to one biblical king who held Israel in a foreign land, or even Caesar who occupied Israel in the time of Jesus, that God did not accomplish His purpose through despite their evil? There are none!, yet God protected and blessed His people anyway!

Instead of obsessing over the White House, real Christians should be concerned with the Father’s house, the edification of the church and escaping black church to become a true follower of the Lord God of Armies.

Now, let’s begin the discussion—to be continued in another article—about how Jesus treated Israel’s political enemies. It’s hard to argue that Jesus discriminated based on background or nationality (Mark 16:15, Rom. 10:13). He healed both a blind Israelite and the servant of their Roman occupiers (Matt. 8:5-13, Matt. 9:27-30).

He had both male and female followers and ministered to Jews as well as their enemies, the Samaritans being one example (Matt. 27:55-56, John 4). Furthermore, His death, resurrection, and salvation offered through such is the ultimate demonstration of the equality of all believers (John 3:1-17).

Like Jesus speaking truth to Pontius Pilate, there’s a time to speak truth to those who hold a population captive or mistreat them (John 18:36-37). I’ve done this and will continue to do so. However, no truth can be presented to God’s enemies in a way that shuts off the fountains of His grace and is dependent upon them accepting truth on our schedule.

Simply put, don’t trust any race-specific truth on behalf of Jesus that excludes grace (Ezek. 33:11, 1 Tim. 2:3-4, 2 Pet. 3:9). Having been around thousands of Black preachers and scholars over the decades, I’ve noticed they value three things above all else, to include Jesus: power, prestige, and position.

Anything that increases success in this pursuit, like forming coalitions against God’s choice in political leadership, will be employed (Dan. 2:21, Rom. 13:1-5). Perhap God has changed and no longer sets-up a genocidal maniacs like Pharoah, Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel), and a politician named Haman in the time of Esther (Exo. 15:1-22, Esther 3:6, Jer. 52:12-14).

Preachers should seek to remain faithful to the gospel above all else (Gal. 1:8, 2 Tim. 1:3). My heart is burdened by the hypocrisy and division surrounding black church leadership's embrace of American politics which has over-run sound doctrine. These would be Dr. Martin Luther Kings' recognize neither the timely prophetic truth of his ministry nor are capable of embracing the biblical times they live in.

Black folk are in the wilderness, needing a new leader and vision yet these clowns are fighting King's battle telling Pharaoh to "let my people go!" We need a modern Joshua to take Canaan and the professed preachers of Jesus have allowed the godless Black Lives Matter movement to serve as our shock troops?

Within our Black Christian leadership, political allegiances and racial agendas overshadow the transformative truth of Jesus Christ. By the mercies of God through the Lord Jesus Christ, I urge us to remember that our ultimate allegiance is not to any political party, leader, or racial identity, but to the Kingdom of God.

Let’s continue deconstructing the nonsensical worldview that Black Christians Should Resist MAGA Christians where we’ll dive deeper into how Jesus approached political enemies and what it means for us today.
