The Widow of Nain appears in the Gospel of Luke chapter 7:11-17. She is a grieving mother whose only son had died, leaving her in a defenseless position as a woman in this ancient, patriarchal society.

However, and as we can all testify to, she encountered Jesus Christ! This interaction occured as she accompanies her son’s funeral procession, she receives an unexpected miracle when Christ, moved by compassion, raises the young man from the dead, restoring him to his mother.

Below is the outline:

Biblical text references: Luke 7:11-17

This sermon outline explores how Jesus’ encounter with the Widow of Nain reflects the God’s heart for the brokenhearted, connecting her story to other biblical accounts of resurrection and restoration.

Theme: God’s compassion and power over death are revealed through Jesus’ miraculous raising of the Widow of Nain’s son, demonstrating His divine authority and tender mercy toward those in despair.

Story Context:

This story occurs early in Jesus’ ministry, shortly after He heals the centurion’s servant in Capernaum. Nain was a small village in Galilee, and the widow, was poor and faced a grief and social vulnerability that in our western culture and its abundance of social services, could hardly understand (after losing her only son)

Jesus’ unsolicited intervention highlights His compassion and divine authority, as He interrupts a funeral procession to restore life. This miracle echoes Old Testament resurrections (e.g., Elijah and Elisha) and foreshadows Jesus’ own resurrection, affirming His identity as the Messiah.

Other Biblical Textual Support:

  • 1 Kings 17:22-23, 2 Kings 4:35-36, Luke 8:54-55, Psalm 68:5, John 11:25-26

Three (3) Key Lesson Points:

1.     The Lord Knows Who the Brokenhearted are

(i)  Jesus was often moved with compassion and his immediate response to the widow’s grief revealing the Lord’s love for those society marginalize.

(i) Jesus’ compassion and love moved Him to speak life into the widow’s dead son proving God’s love is not passive in nature rather transformative to all it touches.

3.     God’s Power Has Authority Over Death

(i)  Raising the widow’s son from death, as well as others in the gospels, demonstrates His authority over death and the grantor of eternal life.

Three (3) Big Ideas per Each Key Point

1. God Sees Those Who Are Brokenhearted and Desperate

  • The Lord Has Divine Awareness into Our Pain (Psa. 56:8).

  • God’s Everlasting Care for the Vulnerable (Psa. 68:5).

  • Personal Encounter: Jesus approaches her personally, showing that God meets us in our specific pain, not as a distant observer.

2. God’s Compassion Leads to Action

  • Jesus Christ’s Mercy is Always Active (Rev. 21:4).

  • Christians Must Break Cultural Barriers Like Jesus (John 4:7-27, Luke 5:29-32).

  • The Lord Provides Holistic Care Which is More Than Social Services.

3. God’s Power Triumphs Over Death

  • Raising the Dead Foreshadows the Eternal Resurrection (1 Kin. 17:22, 2 Kin. 4:35, Luke 8:55).

  • Miracles Proclaim the Kingdom.

  • Jesus’ power over death in Nain prefigures His resurrection, affirming His claim, “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25).

Sermon Summation

The Widow of Nain’s story is a powerful testament to Jesus’ love, compassion, and authority. Like both the widow of Zarephath and the Shunammite woman, and like Jairus’ daughter, this unnamed widow experiences the Lord’s intervention in perhaps the most terrible moment in her life.

Although she had lost her husband, the death of a child proceeding that of a parent is something much more painful!

Jesus recognizes her grief and demonstrates His power over death, restoring not just a life but a family and a community. This miracle invites the Saints to trust that the Lord manifests love toward us.

Beloved, come to Jesus with your deepest grief and faithfully believing He has the power to restore what is broken. As He said to the widow, ‘Do not weep,’ may we hear His voice today, offering hope and life.
