The Sunday School Publishing Board provides faith-based Christian materials to educate followers of Jesus Christ toward maturity in God’s Word and for Kingdom-building purposes. As a student and church leader who actively uses and promotes their Sunday school curriculum—without any compensation—I am a supporter.
Below are my observations and review of their product.
PROS
Scholastic Yet Accessible Writing
The Sunday School Publishing Board offers a quarterly-published Sunday school curriculum written at a scholastic level but in language simple enough for all to understand.
Age-Appropriate Material
The curriculum is divided into several age groups, each with instruction tailored to appropriate cognitive levels.
Well-Structured Weekly Lessons
Each week presents a distinct lesson while staying within a quarterly thematic framework, creating a cohesive connection.
Multiple Bible Versions
For ease of understanding, lessons include verses from both the King James Bible and the New International Version (NIV).
Engaging Collaborative Features
Lessons encourage class participation through questions, multiple readers, and biblical context, fostering noticeable engagement.
CONS
Limited Prophetic Teaching
The curriculum rarely explores advanced prophetic topics, such as End-Times perspectives or connections to modern events.
Avoidance of Controversial Topics
The Board sidesteps biblically grounded but potentially divisive topics, such as whether women should hold ministry leadership roles.
Lack of Modern Context
While Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other Civil Rights icons are mentioned, the curriculum lacks references to contemporary church, business, or African American leadership, reducing engagement.
Unreliable Shipping
Our church frequently experiences delayed or missing shipments of quarterly curriculum. Timely delivery remains a persistent issue.
Overall
The Sunday School Publishing Board, managed by the National Baptist Convention USA, is a commendable organization providing engaging Christian curriculum for Sunday school and discipleship needs.
However, it avoids controversial topics and makes little effort to incorporate modern perspectives, particularly in lesson introductions. Improved shipping and greater inclusion of contemporary contexts could enhance its impact.
